Frequently Asked Questions:
- When can I start taking drivers ed? A student can start the classroom session as early as 14 years old and 10 months. When a student turns 15 and has obtained the permit, then they are eligible to take the behind the wheel lessons.Stating July 1st, 2010, a student must be 15 years old and 6 months to start driver education.
- How can I sign up? A deposit is required to enroll at Safeway. Safeway currently accepts cash, check, or money order. Once enrolled, the student will receive the CDE form required to get the driver education permit.
- How can I get my permit? A student is eligible to get their driver education permit as early as 15 years of age. The student must be enrolled in a driver ed program and can get the permit no sooner than 3 weeks before their driver ed class begins. Once enrolled at Safeway, the student will be issued a CDE form that they must take to the BMV to receive the permit. The BMV will issue a paper permit and a picture permit. The student must carry both permits when they drive. If the students loses the permit, they must go to the BMV and get a duplicate permit.
- How can I schedule the driving lessons? A student must call the office with the DLN# from their permit. Once the DLN# has been given, the office will schedule the driving lessons with the student. Safeway offers driving lessons Monday through Saturday. The students will get to pick the dates and times that will work with their schedule. Safeway requires a 24 hour notice on the cancellation of driving lessons. If the lesson is cancelled within 24 hours of the lesson, then a $30 no show appointment fee is charged.
- Are there other kids in the car when I drive? No. You will have individual lessons with the instructor. If you want to ask questions, that's a great time to do it.
- Can I take the road test with Safeway? Yes! If a student receives a grade of a B or better in both the driving portion and classroom, then they are eligible to take the road test at Safeway. The road test can be taken as early as 16 years of age. Students must take the road test with Safeway prior to taking the written test at the BMV.
- When can I get my license? Students are eligible to apply for a Driver's license at 16 and 30 days. Students must have held the permit for at least 60 days before going to get the license. Students must have the paper permit stamped and signed by Safeway or another driver education program provider before going to the BMV. All students are required to pass a written, road, and eye exam. (These can be taken as early as 16, ask us for details).
- Starting July 1st, 2010, students must wait until they are 16 and 6 months old before obtaining a license. Students turning 16 after May 30th must wait until they are 16 and 6 months old.
- Also starting July 1st, 2010, students must hold their permit for 6 months prior to obtaining a drivers license.
